Husking

Huskings are so much fun to make and are a beautiful feature by themselves or when added to your other quilling designs.

Huskings are made by winding paper around a pattern of sewing/straight pins. Traditionally, this is done with sewing/straight pins, corkboard, and graph paper and/or design pattern. This is a terrific way to husk; however, when doing a project that requires the same size husking, and a lot of them, Elizabeth’s Creations Husking Boards offer consistency and are easier to use than the traditional method.

Basic Husking Instructions

Pins are placed in the hole as you go, this allows for more freedom of movement when winding the paper around the pins. Do not take the pins out of the holes while husking.

1.
Place one pin in hole number 1 and one pin in number 2.
2.
Using a length of paper, gently crease one end and “hook” it around the pin numbered 1.
3.
Bring paper up and wind around pin number 2 and then back down to pin number 1. Glue where the paper overlaps at pin number 1.
4.
Place a pin in hole number 3.
5.
Bring paper up and wind around pin number 3 and then back down to pin number 1. Glue where the paper overlaps at pin number 1.
6.
Place a pin in hole number 4.
7.
Bring paper up and wind around pin number 4 and then back down to pin number 1. Glue where the paper overlaps at pin number 1.
8.
Wrap the paper around the entire husking (I glue each point for added “strength”) and finish off by gluing at the bottom of pin number 1. Tear off the extra paper. You may decide to wrap around several times ~ there is no right or wrong way to do this.
9.
Gently remove the pins from the holes. Any excess glue on the board can be cleaned with soap and water.
This completes the basic instructions for a collared husking. Not all huskings have a collar ~ simply tear off the extra paper when you have completed #7 of the directions.
